FREQUENT LAWLESSNESS and with little law enforcement in the early days of Columbia's Gold Rush
prompted a group of citizens to organize the first Vigilance Committee in 1852

November 28, 1858 - Constable John Leary is attending a fireman's ball
when he was called out to do his duty for Columbia, the 2nd Township
of Tuolumne County and was killed by robbers.
