Population and Details


1850 Census taken in 1851 states 1210 citizens registered. (1851 United States Census - all ethnicities included)

1856 Census (educated quess?) taken in 1856 may have reached 3000 to 5000 citizens. "The population of Columbia is estimated in the Tuolumne County directory, from which we draw most of our statistics, at about five thousand, inluding two hundred families. But we should think it an over-estimate. The town itself, cannot, in our estimation, number over twenty-five hundred to three-thousand. It contains probably over one-hundred businesses, houses, shops, saloons, stables, etc., and among them may be seen over thirty brick fireproof stores." (from a Weekly Columbian newspaper - 1856)
